Detroit 6, NY Yankees 0

DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Tigers didn't waste this homecoming, and Kenny Rogers made every pitch count.

In a ballpark normally locked up by October, the Tigers got 7 2-3 shutout innings from Rogers and outplayed New York in a 6-0 victory, pushing Detroit within one win of shocking the Yankees into an early winter.

The 41-year-old Rogers, one of the few Detroit staffers who doesn't fire 100 mph fastballs, used every pitch in his personal stash to blank a revamped Yankees' lineup for his first career postseason win.

As if conjuring the spirit of former Tigers phenom Mark "The Bird" Fidrych, Rogers spent much of the evening talking to himself on the mound. It was unusual behavior on a night when a full moon hung over the ballpark.

Rogers' first win over the Yankees since 1993 came at the perfect time for the Tigers, who were playing their first postseason game in Comerica Park, the first playoff game in The Motor City since 1987 at Tiger Stadium.

"Hello, San Francisco Giants? This is Mike Francesa. I need to buy some season tickets..."

Oh, is the Dog going to be out of control tomorrow morning.

Awesome performance by Kenny Rogers tonight. I was happy for him.

The Cameramen working the game are relieved. :)

Maybe. I've been calling it the Damon (actually "DEmon") Curse. We Red Sox fans are still angry at Johnny for going to the Dark Side... it's as unthinkable as Derek Jeter joining the Red Sox, IMO.

Good on them, what inspiration to go from worse than pond scum to maybe the world series. Ya' hear Sparky Anderson on WJR w/Frank this morning? He kind of predicted them to go all the way, great to hear him talking pitchin' over a 100mph...

Now let's NOT talk about the hapless Lions.

Go Blue tomorrow.

I have to admit that I've also been rooting for the San Diego Padres because of all the former Red Sox players on the team. Plus I think I'll always be loyal (in the post season) to any team that Dave Roberts is a member of. I'm eternally grateful for his Steal of the Century back in 2004...

A Detroit-Oakland ALCS? Somebody needs to get the Bert Campaneris bat-throwing clips out of the archives.

The Detroit Tigers are the story of the year in baseball, regardless of what they do from here on out. Someone said that the Tigers' entire payroll doesn't equal A-Rod's salary.

Detroit is one of America's best baseball cities. The fans almost rioted when the city fathers tore down that magnificent cathedral of the national pastime, Tiger Stadium.

I'm hoping against hope that the Tigers can make it to The World Series.

I think I heard on drifting AM radio that living legend Hall-Of-Famer Mr. Harwell was going to call the 2nd inning in the next game, can't miss that!

I was very impressed with the Tigers fans during tonight's game... they were on their feet most of the time, and were fully engaged in the game. They were behind their team 110%. Playoff or not, you don't always see that in a lot of baseball stadiums...

It ain't Atlanta, that's for sure.

Or Boston either. New Red Sox players always remark how "every night is a playoff atmosphere at Fenway... it's amazing."

And we in the crowd need none of that electronic "music", horns, clapping, drumbeats, etc. which is supposed to goad the crowd into clapping and cheering for their Red Sox. It's just done naturally, as in the old days. That's one of the best things my husband and I just love about 'ol Fenway. Of course the crowd at Fenway is much smaller than in the modern ballparks... The capacity is just under 35,000.

Way to go Tigers!!!!!!! 1 more then on to Oakland and a rematch of the 1972 AL Championship. Kenny Rogers was spectacular, and Detroit shined tonight. Can't wait for tomorrows game. My kids have never experienced life in Detroit during a World Series run, they are loving it. Keep it up Tigers, we are proud of you.

i love how the press was SO convinced the yankees were "unstoppable"

and here came this group of boys, and they showed the press what theyve known all along, nothing.
