Some mystery.
Although they say the knee surgery and "the illness" are unrelated,
I can't help but wonder if he picked up an infection, maybe even
a skin infection like MRSA.
That took out one of the Washington Redskins last year, IIRC.

Maybe he got something like a fixable problem with colon or prostate...
and maybe he's from a conservative/religional background where
he doesn't want that being the talk of the town.
