OAKLAND -- Murder charges were filed today against Earl Stefanson, the Oakland man who was arrested this week on suspicion of torturing and murdering his girlfriend.
Alameda County Assistant District Attorney Tom Rogers filed the murder charges against Stefanson in connection with the death of Leslie Lamb, 36, of San Leandro. Stefanson also is charged with being an ex-felon in possession of a gun in connection with a revolver police found at his home.
Stefanson has a felony drug conviction in Yolo County from 1995.
Neighbors said today that the Oakland man had a long history of angry confrontations with women.
On Tuesday, Oakland police arrested Stefanson, who they believe may have killed two other people after their bloodstains were found in a torture chamber set up in his home that police likened to one in the film "The Silence of the Lambs."
"We know that he has a history of abusing women," said homicide Sgt. Tony Jones. "It's important that we locate every woman he has ever attacked in his life."
Three neighbors interviewed Thursday said that Stefanson had a history of arguing and yelling at previous girlfriends seen at the home on the 3400 block of Coolidge Avenue in the Dimond District of East Oakland.
"We saw him argue with other girlfriends," said Chuck, who asked that his full name not be used for fear of retribution. "We know that one former girlfriend, who was pretty friendly, left him because she said he abused her. ... We know that he had a temper and could be quite angry."
Two other neighbors, who asked not be named for similar reasons, confirmed Chuck's account.
Stefanson, a 41-year-old roofer from Oakland, was arrested Tuesday night after police determined he was responsible...
