No way!
Do you remember the hooded "Oyster Guy" that they brought out in chains to play kettle drum for "Veteran of the Psychic Wars"?
Spandex did do wonders for hot looking babes in videos in the 80's though. Remember Olivia Newton John going from sappy, drowsy and boring to nova-hot with "Physical"?
I liked New World Man too. Not my favoriate Rush tune, but I thought the "Signals" album was very good. Every now and then you can hear "Countdown" on XM radio. I really like that song.
If we have the same show, it was in '82 or '81. I remember the chains, but thats about it! I have been to the Capital Center umpteen times. The Dead numerous times, Yes, Neil Young, you name it. That was the only time I saw BOC, though..
While these are all bad songs for each particular group, I'd hardly call them AOR-killers.
'The Cars' were the death of AOR. 'The Cars' were not all that bad themselves, but they encouraged other New Wave rock, which lead to a whole lot of dreadful stuff. New Wave was promoted at the expense of AOR. When New Wave proved to be short-lived, promoters looked for a variant for the young teen listener (such as Punk and Rap) rather than returning to what people in their 20s liked.
They've got a new album coming out at the end of October. I'm curious to hear it. I listen to The Who like some people listen to the birds (every day).
Absolutely though Ian has, for some weird reason, gone to making albums full of love songs dedicated to cats....LOL!
[Rupi's Dance", most notably]
His solo "Divinites; Twelve Dances With God" is an instrumental masterpiece.
I went through a Who phase. I even lik Pete's solo stuff. Empty Glass and Cowboys/Chinese Eyes..
I haven't heard much of his solo work, but then I don't know much of Tull's work past the mid 70's either.
LOL.
I think post-new-wave glam killed AOR. It died in 1987.
As incredible and incomprehensible as that always seemed to me, yes.
yeah, true. it was steven tyler I was talking about.
It sure gets REO right outta yer noggin, though....:))
I guess I'll just have the fond memories of their many albums.
It was 1981.
[the only reason I remember what year it was is because I got married a month later]
I actually really liked the 'Cars' first 3 albums. The third, "Panorama", was weaker & darker but I still liked it. Unfortunately they listened to their "critics" after the 3rd album and decided to get somewhat sappy. I still liked "Since You've Gone" and a few other songs, but they got a little too light for me. I'm still looking forward to the retrospective coming out October 17 though....
LOL ... I'm assuming it's just a phase for me too, but it started in the mid-80s, so it's quite a long phase. I listen to other stuff, but not the way I listen to the Who.
I didn't really start getting into The Who until around 10 years ago, because classic rock stations were still kind of rare. Now, they're all the rage as adults are sick of the crap coming out on top 40 pop and rap is just plain insulting.
Country doesn't get off either, as a lot of the songs you'll hear on those stations are simply recycled versions of the same sap you hear on the pop stations. It's the same songs, with the same writers, performed by different singers or groups. This has been going on for about 15 years.
Mostly now, if it's not classic rock, it's talk radio. I'll throw in the local jazz station when I'm in the mood, but they've also sold out to the new jazz that's more like Muzak than anything Satchmo or even Al Jarreau would ever listen to without puking.
