Paul McCoy ran for 658 yards in a high school football game and, believe it or not, may not have set a national record with his feat.
The total tops the National Federation of State High School Association's listed record of 619 yards set by Ronney Jenkins of Oxnard, Calif., in 1995. But high school records historian Doug Huff said Saturday the recognized record is 739 yards by John Giannantonio of Netcong, N.J., in 1950, against Mountain Lakes.
McCoy piled up his yardage on just 29 carries - an average of 22.7 yards per attempt - and scored 10 touchdowns as Matewan beat Burch 64-0 on Friday. McCoy racked up 477 of his yards scoring on TD runs of runs, which covered 69, 1, 52, 56, 52, 20, 31, 84, 87 and 25 yards.
He also had a 77-yard TD run called back because of a penalty.
"The National Federation book for some reason does not include that (the 739 yards), and I think the reason is there's a formal process for submitting those things," Huff said Saturday. "This school doesn't exist anymore. The papers recognized it. The school had a special ceremony. It's been in my records for years."
McCoy did set a state record with his 658 yards, and his 10 TDs would tie him with two others for the second most nationally. The record is 12, set by Ken Pearson of Hugo, Colo., in 1930.
McCoy, averaging 345 yards per game, has 1,723 yards and 26 touchdowns this season.
I bet we'll be seeing more of this fellow in the future ....
This is a joke. What message do these clowns send leaving their starter in with the score that high? It also has zero bearing on his future given the opposition. Pathetic.
Matewan, WV.-- legendary home of the Hatfields and McCoy feuds. The kid's name is McCoy, perhaps the opponent was full of Hatfields?
The Packers can use this kid.
The Packers could use their whole team.
Looks like they need a new kicker.
I suspect McCoy is their kicker; his leg must have been dead after chewing up all the yardage.
At 5'9" and 170 lbs he probably won't get a scholarship to any major college.
My high school was a football power; the years I was in high school we had "bad" teams that broke even in win-loss record.Well, a Saturday came along when the school was undefeated and had an away game scheduled. And the weather was just about as bad as it gets - barely above freezing and raining cats and dogs. It was so bad that all the games in the county were postponed.
All but one. Yup, that one. The home team was up for the game, big time - and wouldn't postpone. And the home team did in fact win.
The following year I was at a home game with my brother. Our team was ahead and I noticed that the score was running up, and all the starters were all still in the game. I asked my brother what was going on, and he said, listen to the song they're singing in the stands. It was, "It ain't gonna rain no more."
I don't think it started a feud, but I think it ended one.
Realistically this kid may never see a minute of playing time beyond the HS level. He will have some great memories of when he did play.
They figured OJ Simpson was too small for NFL running back, too. Maybe, maybe not.
While he may be a good running back this mostly shows the complete lack of a defense, even a bad defense, by the opposing team.
Is that you, Ben Burch?
I was reading some HS stats about 20 years ago and it seemed like a guy named Hall from Sugarland, Texas had most of them. I suppose that has changed by now.
