Pompeii Lovers' Affair Uncovered After 2,000 YearsArchaeologists digging in the ruins of what was once Pompeii's "hotel zone" have found the entwined bodies of the couple, together with a bag of gold jewellery that they had tried to take with them as they fled in vain from the volcano's fury. The couple had been a rich businessman and a young slave girl (ancilla), who had clearly risen up the social ladder to become his favorite mistress. Professor De Simone said that the girl had apparently been "adopted" by her master at the age of 7, since the figure VII was engraved on a gold ring found on her finger.
