Actually, the rule was you should only eat shellfish during R months because the seawater is then chilly enough that the bacteria doesn't thrive.

The (sensible) old-wives idea was to eat oysters ONLY in months with an R --- in other words, NOT in the warm months of May, June, July, and August, but OK September-April.
Why? Because bacteria proliferate in shellfish in the warmer waters of summertime.

The old wives tale was that you should never eat shellfish in months with an R in the name...........That should read without an R as the summer months warmer water helps sustain bacteria. Same with saving rain water in a cistern.
