Still, odds don't favor the Astros. However, there is always a first time for everything. Cards faded like this in September last year too. No one could get a key hit except Pujols and no pitcher could hold a lead. Last night was the exception on pitching where both the starting pitchers and bullpen played well.
Bill Hall homers and the Brewhas are up 2-0 in the 1st.
Two more runs in the second. Milwaukee 4, St. Louis 0.
That hurt.
Marquis gets chased in the third. Hancock fails to stop the bleeding.
Milwaukee 8, St. Louis 0.
Now 9-1 in the top of the fourth. Man, I'm glad I'm not a Cards fan.
Cards lose, 9-4. Houston is now just 1/2-game behind.

That collar is tightening....should be an interesting weekend.
This is actually great to watch (and, again, glad I'm not a Cards' fan). Their's is a collapse of Biblical proportions.
True but it doesnt say much for Houston in that they are still half game behind and both teams have nearly 20 fewer victories this year than in the last two years. The entire Central Division sucks. Actually so does the entire National League.
This collapse reminds me of the '69 Cubs. Something like seven games ahead with seven games left in the season and they lost to the Mets.
Had it not been for Houston's amazing surge over the past couple of weeks, the Cards would have backed into the playoffs. The Mets will likely go to the WS, so it's all academic. But the race in the Central certainly makes for high drama.
Do you realize that over the past nine games there have been at least two times and maybe three when there have been the oposing team has had men on 3rd and 2nd with two outs and the Cards have refused to intentionally pass the batter (in one case the guy had eight hits off that pitcher, six of which were homeruns). So what happens, in each situation count goes to 3-2 and then the final pitch is knocked out of the park. Totally amazing. I'm through with Baseball.
I don't know, the Astros are peaking, and they have the pitching to win a series. They've been there before, and should they get into the post-season, they are going to be tough for anyone they play. Who would you rather face int he playoffs, Houston or St Louis? I think the Mets would much rather face St Louis.
LaRussa doesn't look as much like a genius anymore.
The funny thing is "peaking" is a relative term. The 2004 Astros were a really good team but a little weak in starting pitching. The 2005 team wasn't as good as the 2004 team, even though they went further. The 2006 team is worse than the 2005 team but they may just eek their way in anyway because the rest of the league is so bad. And if they make it, who knows? Maybe they get on a roll.
What is true is that they all seem to get hot when summer ends.
The Stros must be channeling Houdini, with their great escapes over the past few years.
Ahem. You were saying?
Who were they channeling tonight?
UNGHHHH! What a frustrating night for the Tigers, thank God the Twinkies lost too.
