Mozilla Corp. will unveil a release candidate of Firefox 2.0 later Tuesday, the next step toward finalizing the browser's first major upgrade in a year.
According to notes posted in the developers' section of the Mozilla Web site, Firefox 2.0 RC1 is on track to debut Tuesday, Sept. 26. "This is just to let everyone know that the QA testing for RC1 is complete," read the note.
Firefox 2.0 has already gone through a pair of beta versions; the last, Beta 2, was released at the end of August. Mozilla has not set a release date for the final.
At least one more release candidate will be posted before the final is put on the street, Mike Schroepfer, Mozilla's director of engineering, wrote elsewhere on the company's site. "We have a handful of bugs that look reasonable to cause a FF2 RC2," said Schroepfer, who also urged staff and volunteer developers to keep moving.
"We are in the end game here - which means days matter and our tolerance for risk is *zero*. We will not take bugs unless they are of great benefit: crashes, web compatibility, and major regressions. IMHO [In My Humble Opinion] FF2 RC1 is already a tremendously superior product to FF15. So let's wrap this up!"
Firefox 2.0 features several additions and improvements to 1.5, which was released in November 2005, including anti-phishing alerts, session restore, spell checking, and suggested searches. The open-source browser, which will roll out as RC1 in versions for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux in nearly 50 localized editions, will compete later this year with Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7, which is also currently in Release Candidate form.
Firefox 2.0 RC1 can be downloaded from the Mozilla.org Web site starting at 3 p.m. PDT on Tuesday.
FYI....you probably are already running this!
I'm tempted...
NO! Better to wait for final release.
But I'm tempted...
NO!
(repeat)
I'm going through the same thought process lol.
I'm also a little tentative myself, but glad I made the jump!
And which version of Firefox spooked you?
They can bloat this thing with features, but unless they fix the memory leaks and stability issues, what good is it really?
Thank you!!! I like the new spell check option.
No version of Firefox, but beta and pre-release software. I prefer not to subject myself to it after many past problems with various kinds of software. Even though it's tempting to install the RC firefox, the one I'm using is working just fine so I'll wait on the 'gold' release.
Point taken, point understood.
Extensions and themes update on a per-author basis. If the author was shortsighted enough to not set the maxVersion at or beyond 2.0, you're screwed.
A workaround is to install an extension like MR Tech Local Install, which has an option to force extensions and themes to bypass version checking and just install. If you upgrade to a new version and Firefox deactivates certain themes or extensions, you can just right-click them in the Extensions/Themes menu and hit Make Compatible. Voila.
Actually, one thing I've noticed in later 1.5.x releases of Firefox is that when you do an update of all components it searches for all theme and extension updates along with updating the browser. Given that Firefox 2.0 Release Candidate 1 is essentially feature complete except for bug fixes, hopefully all the extension and theme writers now have time to update their code to work with Firefox 2.0 when the final version rolls out (probably by the end of October 2006 at latest).
Is there a way to shut that function off?
just downloaded it and now using it. so far so good...
You can also manually edit a file within the .xpi package to increase the max version parameter...if you don't have the Mr. Tech extension that is.
Lemme know how it goes. < |:)~
