What a sleezebag of a lawyer ~ this is roughly Guy Fawke's defense ~ that none of the various things he'd done, from taking gunpowder into Parliament, to lighting matches, was a violation of law.

The Brits hanged him anyway for trying to blow up Parliament.

I suspect that when you are in the act of commiting a crime, possessing the "tools of the trade" is probably another count they can use to keep these people in jail for a long time.
