Sister Joining Jehova's Witnesses-Should I be Worried?

Posted on 09/18/2006 1:23:37 PM PDT by agooga

My sister is 43 years old, lives in a very small town about 1,000 miles away in our home town. We have relatives in the town as well. She has a 4 year old son (no father) and has fallen for a man there who is a JW.

They are seriously talking of marriage and she seems to be well on the road to adopting his religion.

We were raised Catholic, but she hasn't set foot in a church in years, as far as I know.

I know little to nothing of JW, other than the usual bad rap it gets as a "cult," etc.

I WILL BE DOING MY OWN RESEARCH (for all the FReepers out there who complain that people actually ask other people's advice/opinion rather than Doing Their Own Research). But I often find that I get some interesting POV's by soliciting here.

And, don't let my tagline scare you off-- I am not anti-religion in the least. I think religion in general has been a huge positive net gain for mankind.

Goofball cult. Just a slight step up from the Scientologists.

I think a sister who is 43 years old is old enough to make her own decisions and live with the consequences.

Any worrying you might do would likely lead to interference with her, and probably won't be appreciated.

(1) The JW group is a cult, and that's not just an insult. It meets all the criteria that social scientists look for in assessing cult status.

(2) It is not Christian. JW teaching specifically denies that Jesus is God. If you are Catholic, you should know that your sister is abandoning Christianity for a non-Christian religion.

(3) The JWs interfere in life choices like choice of a career, etc., sometimes in very aggressive ways.

(4) You cannot leave the JWs without nasty repercussions. If she decides to leave in the future, JWs will tell lies about her in order to help her husband retain custody of her children. It will get very nasty. People who were her best friends when she was a JW will turn on her with extreme viciousness the second she leaves. If she steps out of line but does not leave, she may be subjected to the silent treatment from her own spouse, children and friends.

You will save money on Christmas and birthday presents, at least, as they don't celebrate those. Most of the Jehovah's Wittnesses I know pretty regular folks. They have about the same amount of goofiness as any other religion, no more, no less.

although she likely will never shoot anyone, you can forget about Christmas get togethers because that cult doesn't believe in gifts, etc.

It seems to me there are worse Religions out there. I will give them credit for their persistence. If they sold vacuums instead of Religion they'd be very, very, wealthy.

I agree, the JW's I know are no more or less goofy than the average population.

Sister Joining Jehova[h]'s Witnesses-Should I be Worried?

If you weren't worried before, there's no reason you should be more worried now.

Should you be worried? In a word...

YES!

As above, it's a cult. Period.

I've never had an Amish come to my door with a copy of the Watchtower. LOL
