The version of the story I heard, is that at some earlier time, Thorpe had been paid $5 to participate in a baseball game, which was not an Olympic sport.

Sorry for the delay in reply, I got busy doing the Sunday stuff.
I believe that indeed, Thorpe was paid for a non-related sport, but that in receiving the money, he revoked his amateur status.
The precedent that would set is that being ruled ineligible, it caused his awards to be pulled. This would directly apply to Reggie Bush's case where, once ruled ineligible, his awards would be rescinded.
