The Collector ( 1965 )
directed by: William Wyler starring: Samantha Eggar

Based on a disturbing and complex novel by John Fowles, who himself was inspired by the Caliban/Miranda relationship from Shakespeare's The Tempest, this thriller is a disturbing story of obsession. Terence Stamp is a maladjusted bank clerk who collects butterflies and decides he wants to add a beautiful art student (Samantha Eggar) to his collection. He abducts her and keeps her captive in a secluded farmhouse cellar. Director William Wyler keeps the audience constantly guessing about the fate of Miranda. Oscar-nominated for Best Director, Actress (Samantha Eggar), Adapted Screenplay (Stanley Mann). Stamp and Eggar won the top acting prizes at the Cannes Film Festival.

This movie is incredibly disturbing, but seemed to ring true about the serial predator personality type.

When they say the movie is "complicated", that's an understatement.

I seen the movie in the mid/late 70's in one of my English classes. We wrote essays about that movie for weeks on end. It it extremely deep as it is disburbing.

We also did Crawl Space, Willard, "The Bad Seed", and the all time horror classic: Frogs.

Yep, essay city up the wazzoo about every single aspect about those movies.

Can you image how many papers we had to write after seeing A Patch of Blue? I think we had to read the book & watch the movie on that one. And I don't even want to talk about Of Mice & Men. Therapy cost me millions. It took me years to even come close to an essay after all that.

First English class I took in college was Composition. Guess what I had to do in that class? I was a glutton for punishment, and I took Compostion II after that (Themes in Literature. Had to write essays about stuff, like Young Goodman Brown, The Rose, Cask of Amontilado, etc. Sheesh.
