I don't know how on earth they elected a republican gov over there. In reality the state of Hawaii is run by liberal democrats. I lived on the Big Island for 6 yrs and could hardly stand it. And the unions . . . and the corruption . . . and the plantation mentality. Barf.

Woah woah woah. First of all Linda Lingle got elected because the sheer incompetence of the Hawaii Democratic party could no longer be ignored. I worked on her campaign and basically all we had to do to win was list the ridiculous garbage that happened under in the 8 years before she took office. Second of all Hawaii Democrats are not what we identify as "liberal Democrats" today. They are hardly activist or progressive. The same sex marriage ballot issue several years ago got vote down 80%-20% in a state with only 2 Republican state senators at the time. Hawaii democrats believe in big government, big unions and blatant patronage and nepotism.

I really do think things are changing for the better though. Our economy has become more dependent on small business and less on big plantation agriculture. Sugar cane growing has almost completely died out in Hawaii. The only agricultural product that isn't being rolled back in Hawaii is coffee (but that's because we grow the best coffee in the world and can sell it for $20/pound).

Furthermore, since elected ,Lingle has done a superb job and is wildly popular. The Democrats don't even have a viable candidate to run against her yet. This would have been unimaginable only 4 years ago.

May I ask where on the Big Island did you live? It sounds like you lived in Hilo. Hilo is epitome of everything that is wrong with old Hawaii. By contrast, on the other side of the island is Kona, which is the epitome of what new Hawaii can be. It's no accident that Hilo is a Democrat strong hold and Kona is VERY solidly Republican. In fact, because of Kona, the Big island was the county where Lingle had the largest margin of victory. i would also point out that your flag indicates that you now live in Kalifornia.
