Just off the top of my head, could He and his mother get into a fight and to get back at her he takes an overdose(thinking that it would be "safe", being in a hospital) but it backfires cuz everyone goes to sleep and therefore nobody notices his seizures and he dies without getting medical attention he thought would save him.

BTW, some teenage boys who saw her hug and smooch her son felt it was gross, said they would be harassed if anyone saw their mothers doing it to them and would never ever want a mother like her.
