Then why are there so few people who can do it well? Some of the best ones are former marines. They wanted another challenge.

Start paying teachers BIG money and maybe you will get the best of the best.
My kids have had every kind of teacher...from FABULOUS to BAD. The worst teachers were those that didn't know their subject. Sometimes the BEST were liberals and it honed my kids debating/thinking skills.
The problem is parents, IMO. Parents MUST keep an ongoing dialogue with their kids from sex to politics and everything in between. TOO many parents send their kids to school and and "check out". Those parents wouldn't be candidates for homeschooling anyway....nor would they ever even consider it.
