Naproxen makes me sick to my stomach.

Advil all the way.

Naproxen works way better than Celebrex in managing the pain from my arthritis.

Contradiction, even within the article. First it states:

Those especially worried about safety could try pain ointments first, said Dr. Richard Jermyn, director of the University Pain Care Center in Stratford, N.J. If they don't help, he suggests Tylenol, then naproxen or ibuprofen before resorting to Celebrex, a Pfizer Inc. drug in the same class as Merck & Co.'s Vioxx. He urges patients on any of those drugs to get liver and kidney function tests every six months

So the order from that paragraph would be tylenol, then naproxen or ibuprophen, and then Celebrex.

But the list shows:

1. Naproxen 2. Celebrex 3. Ibuprofen

So it puts Celebrex ahead of ibuprophen.

Go figure, LOL!

cox-1 inhibitors from aspirin to the NSAIDS, including some pretty unusual prescription ones, never really worked worth a darn for me. Finally, for an unusual condition, I was prescribed a cox-2 inhibitor, Celebrex.

For the first time in my life, I had a "So that is what a painkiller is *supposed* to be like", feeling. It really worked and I could *tell* that it was working. It actually stopped the pretty serious pain.

No noticeable side effects. For those who are concerned about dangerous side effects, I gather that two groups are at risk: teenage girls, because it may not work well with a lot of estrogen in the system; and patients with severe arterial clogging.

They got a real shock from the later group. When they gave them both a cox-1 and a cox-2 inhibitor, it caused catastrophic failure of their plaque deposits. It was like Drano on their pipes. But you do *not* want big chunks of arterial plaque breaking off and floating in your bloodstream. They had to cancel those tests because they were too dangerous.

Naproxen takes about a day to kick in for me. Ibuprofen starts working within a few minutes. I sure hope Voltaren doesn't get taken off the market. I'd rather take it than Vicodin.

What kind of ridiculousness is this? Wait SEVEN YEARS before trying any new drug that comes on the market?

Aleve was the worst experience of my life; I was sick to my stomach for almost 48 hours afterward, dizzy, etc. To be honest, my memory of it is very fuzzy. Wouldn't take that drug again if you paid me.

Aleve is like a miracle drug for me. Zero pain for at least 6 hours.

Where does Hydrocodone fit in that list? That seems to be a common one. My dad has taken that for his pain, and I was wondering.

This is very confusing. It was just 2004 when there were warnings issued for naproxen.

See the articles here: Search results for Aleve warning

ANYONE who takes any kind of pain killer like Naproxen, aspirin, tylenol, etc should be taking DGL - deglyccerized licorice.....it protects your stomach. (But, most doctors don't know this.)

Are you an adult?

I suggest you try something called "asprin."

If you need something more, contact a doctor who isn't afraid to proscribe more potent painkillers.

One thing that happened to me, when prescribed naproxen for back problems, was it affected my eyes. There is a big warning under the side effects of this drug about vision problems, that if you notice any, stop taking & get to an eye doctor immediately.

It caused problems with focusing my eyes, plus it raised the pressure in my eyes & it can also cause early onset of cataracts! So, as glorious as this report sounds, there are always side effects & before taking any med, you should look up the side effects on the net.

Some of these vision problems are not readily apparent til you've been on the med for several months & the pressure in the eyes is not apparent til a doctor looks at you. In other words, you have no symptoms that the pressure is up.

As is plain to see in this thread, different people react differently. I have a chronic back injury and doc also thinks possibly RA and, especially for back flareups, naproxen works fairly well. Doc thinks it might have caused some heartburn I get sometimes but I don't agree with that association since I also get that acid reflux while not having had any meds in weeks.

I'm at the point where I should probably start taking something regularly for the joint pain
(since I have it for several hours every day now) so I'm starting to read up on what's out there. I dunno about the cox 2 inhibitors, with risk factors for heart disease I'm not ready to jeopardize my health to relieve arthritis pain. The doctor has his favorites of course, but in my experience his first choice is seldom the one that works for me.

dozens of studies including hundreds of thousands of patients, indicate most patients should try naproxen, an older anti-inflammatory drug.

go ahead and try it, hopefully it will work for you, but i have found naproxen to be very ineffective.

Aleve (one of the name brands for the OTC version) works great, lasts half the day, and unlike ibuprofen doesn't give me upset stomach -- which, in my condition, could be life threatening. ;')
