Diana Wanted to Become America's First Lady
Paul Burrell with Princess Diana. (ABC News)
By KATE SNOW
NEW YORK, Sept. 12, 2006 In his new blockbuster book, "The Way We Were," Paul Burrell says that Princess Diana had ambitions to become the first lady of the United States.
"She knew a billionaire in America, and she suggested to him that if they were together. His yearning to run in politics could lead to the White House, that one day she could be the first lady and she'd visit Britain on a state visit," Diana's former butler and confidant said to "Good Morning America's" Kate Snow in an exclusive interview.
Burrell said that in the mid-1990s Diana had dreamed of following in the footsteps of stylish first ladies.
"She's been a huge fan of Jackie Onassis for years, and a huge admirer, too, of Nancy Reagan and Hillary Clinton. But Jackie Onassis had the edge. And she fantasized about redecorating the White House," Burrell said.
"It wasn't a fantasy. It could have been a reality. It really could. They would have been a golden couple."
While the mystery man in New York had political connections, he was not the love of Princess Diana's life.
Neither was Prince Charles or Dodi Al Fayed, Burrell said, who dismisses claims that Diana was engaged to Fayed when they died in a Paris car crash.
"She was not going to marry Dodi Al Fayed, because there was someone else in her life. She had a soul mate, and she'd fallen in love with someone else," he told Snow.

Hey, "that's what makes the world go 'round".
(I did find her attractive, so we're not polar opposites here.)
Might the Butler have just thought he was a Billionaire? That's the only person I can see her hooking up with and being a "golden couple."
I don't think he was a billionaire, but I thought of him first too. Had the two of them ended up together, a lot of people would have voted for him, just because....
>>>Not really. She was NEVER a normal girl, despite the MSM fantasy. Before she was princess di she was Lady Diana Spencer. Growing up she played with Prince Andrew, whom she had originally hoped to marry. She wasn't some commoner who snagged a prince. She was one of them. Her father at one time had hoped to be the Queen's consort. >>>
She was more of a 'commoner' than Paris Hilton, whose only attribute is being born rich. Diana was at least normal in the sense of family at home. She was NOT wealthy. She was not poor, but she was not this super royal family. They thought they had hit the high life when she got a swimming pool to practice for the swim team. She lived at home with her siblings in a regular family. More than 'normal' than most celebrity children today.
>>>Doesn't anyone wonder why Charles preferred Camilla over Diana? Or any number of other women.>>>
Because he's an idiot?
Seriously? I never wanted to be a princess. I wanted to be Miss America. ; )
That's what I'm inclined to suspect.
No comparison. Diana looked MUCH better in a backless Versace.
My cousin was the Captain of the Cheerleaders and at our 40th reunion she still was hot! 'course some Italian chicks age well, (like Sophia or Gina). Others, well they take on the egg plant shape and carry a wooden spoon, (sorry Grams). Guess I just dated myself!
That whole Disney Princess thing is a monster, I bought princess panties to encourage my then two year old down the potty training path.
Now there's princess crap everywhere. I blame their daddy, he is such a sucker....
Hey,a boiled bunny or two is a price I would have paid.Gladly paid!
John Kennedy Jr. I always thought they would have made an beautiful couple. And their children would have been gorgeous too.
I really did love John Kennedy Jr. I don't know what his politics were but if he'd joined with Dianne, and left that woman he married, Caroline, he would have been unstoppable
vey series.
>>>Seriously? I never wanted to be a princess. I wanted to be Miss America. ; )>>>
UGH! I never wanted to be Miss America. All that baton twirling...
Just give me spacial estates with plenty of horses, ball gowns. It was either a princess or Priscilla Presley. Hehe
Strangely, she has become quintessentially American in a way. She is more beautiful, spunky and successful than she used to be, and has avoided public, bitter, ugliness with the Prince. They lived in the same house and managed to do right by their children. She owned up to her mistakes and never tried to paint herself a victim.
If you are looking to find a heroine in British Royalty, I would suggest the Queen Mother or Fergie. Both truly remarkable women...albeit less "perfect."
I dunno, man. Remember, that was back in the dark ages before the invention of these modern wonder drugs...
Of course, we were younger then, too...
