Two Officers Fired after Alleged Assault
WTVD Eyewitness News
(09/14/06 - DURHAM) - Durham police fired two officers Thursday after they allegedly were involved in an assault outside a bar.
Officer Gary P. Lee and Officer Scott C. Tanner have been charged with simple assault in connection with a July 20 incident at Blinco's sports bar on Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh. Police Chief Steve Chalmers announced Thursday that Lee and Tanner had been fired.
Since being charged, both Lee and Tanner had been on administrative duty with pay with the Durham Police Department.
Three other officers have been cleared of any wrongdoing.
Rene Dennis Thomas, a 29-year-old cook at the bar, has said he was standing outside the bar when a truck stopped. He found himself surrounded by at least three more cars. Thomas said he fell to the ground after several men got out of the cars. He was hit and a shoe grazed his face.
The Raleigh Police Department issued criminal summonses against the officers.
