THe picture is coming together clearly. Simultaneously, there was a DA with an upcoming election and police with a track history of (at best) grossly exaggerating incidents involving Duke students. Those incidents were disgusting and worthy of citations, but nowhere near what Gottlieb charged (sound familiar?). From my experience, neighbors of Duke students who were sick of the public urination, noise violations, drunken behavior, etc. were pressuring Durham to do something, really anything, and Gottlieb served as their personal hero by making life miserable enough for the Duke students to leave.

The flag incident noted in the article is revealing because it shows his willingness to concoct a charge to make life more painful for Duke students when he had to know there was no way that charge would ever be sustained. Gottlieb will be destroyed when he testifies, and now there is a sound evidentiary basis for suggesting his report is a pack of lies -- he's done it before.

The documents requested by the defense, including Gottlieb's timeline he prepared in early April for Patrick Baker, will be important because he prepared it before he got his story straight. Combine a rogue cop with a dingbat DA, and you get phony rape charges.

I hope the documents haven't disappeared.

You make some excellent points.

It appears that Gottlieb had no fear of being rebuked or censured by a Judge in Durham - and he didn't fear any internal investigation into his actions. I doubt someone that believed they were subject to oversight or even the possibility of scrutiny would've acted like this repeatedly.

He operated fearlessly - did he have good reason?
