I'm so sorry about this; I think of them often.
So....are these contractor guys good?

Seem to be--they checked for updraft and the detector noted a high level of CO. They took the flue apart and have been pulling grass & twigs out of flue for the past half-hour. Dang--the cap must have blown off the water heater/boiler portion of the flue; I have the chimney cleaned every August and the chimney sweeps didn't say a thing about any blockage. Why the good Lord keeps watching out for OB and me is a mystery.
Damn squirrel nest in yer chimney.
You have CO detectors, don't you?
We currently have one, in the bedroom. Guess this is a wake-up call for me to get more. Though if they ever get the flue cleaned out, it should be fine for a couple of years. The *rap is packed really tightly and they are having a terrible time getting it out past the bend.
I called the chimney sweeps, but they have the answering machine on "due to a high volume of calls". Sigh
I've got one in the bedroom. I would get one for the living room but the instructions say not to put it near gas appliances (and I have that gas water heater in a hall closet.)
I like Get Fuzzy...though some of 'em are a lot funnier than others. Not so sure about that one. I do love how purely selfish and evil Bucky is. Heh...

Good morning! I'm trying to figure out how I got onto the Runaway Bride ping list...don't think I ever posted on those threads. Hrm.
I asked the water heater replacement guy your question about tuneing up the water heater, and he said "no" but if you flushed them about every 6 months it would substanially increase the life span of the water heater by reducing the sediment. Our current water heater was installed in 1987, so there's that.
Speaking of spam, lately my Gmail account's spam folder has been getting spam that starts with an interesting sentence, like the start of a story. Taking advantage of the way Gmail shows you the first line of a note before you open it.
I suppose if I get really desperate for plot ideas, I can tack a few of those together...
Well, the chimney sweeps are here now. Can't get to blockage from the basement due to the bend in the liner; are now going uptop. Good thing the young kid is fearless, it's a good 40 feet off the ground, and the chimney extends 10-12(or more) feet above the roofline. I'm NOT going outside to look.
They carry insurance, right?
Yeesh...the outlet that my laptop, printer and crackberry charger were plugged into just blew. Don't think anything is damaged, but that was weird...
I think so, they are a reputable company....
The Corin Effect?
The chimney sweeps are now chisling and pulling out the liner; it is packed within 8 feet of the top of the flue, the previous installer put on a cap, but no mesh, so the birds have been flying in and out of there for all this time. There is no way to get the packed mess out without destroying the liner, so we have to have a new liner put in; it will be Saturday or Sunday unless someone cancels. Sigh!
Danged varmints! So you can't breathe inside the house until Saturday?
We can breathe; they rigged-up a vent from the water heater and it vents through the unlined opening. As an added precaution, I'll leave the window near the water heater open. The boiler, on the other hand, is not vented at all, so it is off. It's going to get chilly in the house if the weatherweenies are right about the temps dropping into the mid-30's. Think I'll go get some firewood in before it rains anymore!
mine?
