Glad you made it back safe...
Not too long now till it'll be dark when you come home from work at night... Anything that can be done to make it better? Is it a get-used-to thing?
It was the same back home on shiny wet nights, except that I didn't have to merge into traffic, which adds a whole 'nother level of complication...so I think I just pray a lot. ;-)
Other than a passenger who's able to tell me when it's safe to get over, there isn't a lot that can be done. I've thought about maybe coming the really long back way on the worst days (take College over to the Yelm Hwy and then back that way), but I don't think that's all that practical.
That's actually a pretty heavily used route, too. Don't know if you've done it at rush hour or not.
There has to be a way to learn how to do this... It can be a challenge for anyone to tell where cars are at night on the freeway, but I don't care how strong your faith is, "just pray alot" isn't a good driving tactic! I worry about you. Are there better mirrors you could install? LSAggie mentioned mirrors once.
I've not done the Yelm Highway route during rush hour, except for portions of it. The thing is, even though it's busy, really you just get on and drive. And there aren't people trying to get on and off except by regular old right and left turns. There are a few places where there are two lanes, but you don't really have to do a lot of merging in and out, not on the parts between Lacey and here. But it's still a long way out of the way.
My biggest barrier is probably still mental, and that's that I'm afraid of getting in the way of other drivers by doing everything at a snail's pace. I can get in OK if I'm really careful...but any kind of tiny hold up can make everyone mad and cause other problems. I guess I'll at least get better at it, most likely, though I doubt it'll ever be something I'm comfortable with. Just the way it is.
I've come a long way, though.
A little over 3,100 miles, actually :~D Indeed!
I think slowing people down is way better than not being sure if you're cutting into someone's lane. Don't worry about going slow... at all!
But I thought you'd appreciate this introduction of Jim Webb's Secret Campaign Advisor.
Now if I could just have a recording of that phrase, repeated very slowly and calmly by someone with a nice soothing voice...I could press that the second I started to enter the Interstate each evening, and maybe avoid panicking. ;-)
What time does the van get dropped off tomorrow, BTW?
Heh...got my brother well hooked on 24 before he left. We watched that one episode last night and he begged for more today. I think he's going to be seeking out a rental place that has the rest of that season when he gets back. I'm so evil...
Rosie, You might try some parabolic stick-on-mirrors that go on the upper inside of your outside mirrors. They are very inexpensive and you can get them at any auto-parts store, heck, I've even seen them in the auto-parts section of K-Mart.
What these things do is allow you see more of what is besides/behind you that the outside mirrors alone. OB got them because he has such a limited neck range-of-motion, i.e., since his neck was broken, it doesn't turn very much. The mirrors give you two "reference points" for vehicles behind you, and you can more accurately judge for distance. I like them because they show vehicles that are otherwise in the "blind spot" all vehicles have.
I don't know enough to know if it's fair... but it's good to see some South Park play in politics :~)
As early as we can get it there. Let me know when you're caffeinated in the morning. :~)
Could be worse... could be Cartman :~)
Short version:
Jim Webb is an anti-Semite who used the tactic against his primary opponent and called him the "Anti-Christ of Outsourcing."
George Allen was attacked by a reporterette Monday with a planted debate question that 1) implied his mother was a racist and 2) questioned his Jewish heritage.
His grandfather was Jewish and was imprisoned by the Nazis. But the family did not know his religious heritage. Allen's mother never spoke of it.
Somehow, this is supposed to be bad news for Allen? His response to the reporterette was "why is this relevant?"
Jim Webb is anti-Semite, anti-black, anti-women and he has a posse of paid bloggers doing his nasty bidding all over the blogosphere.
Pretty much end of story.
Fabulous... :~\. so when is your primary?
We're in the general election cycle. Webb won the RAT primary in June.
Oh - I see. See how much I don't know?!
'sok, yer 3,000 miles away.
I'll just send you an absentee ballot.
Well you're doing better in VA then us Floridians -- in the Senate race it is grit our teeth and pray for a miracle!
Happy birthday to the heroic Hobbits...
...tomorrow, that is...
Heh heh...
