A national public opinion survey found that 69% of Americans are against killing horses for human consumption. The findings come just a week before the U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on a bill that would end horse slaughter for human consumption. The poll was conducted among 800 likely voters Aug. 9-13 by Public Opinion Strategies, and has a margin error of plus or minus 3.46%. It also found that 71% of Americans believe that horses are part of America's culture and deserve better treatment, but that 64% felt it was important not to pass judgment on the eating habits of other cultures.

Hey, I tried the "Carrot on a Stick" trick once while riding a mule. The only thing wrong was that it just ticked him off because he did not get the carrot. Then he would turn around and try to bite me. That was the last time I tried that.

Horse slaughtered for human consumption in the US is general for export to Europe (primarily to Britain to a lesser extent France).
Horse meat is sweeter and leaner than beef.
Having spent considerable time on farms in my youth I will not pass judgement on anyone eating any animal.
But I will say this in order of stupidest mammals that we eat I will put the cow as first then the horse then the pig.
So if you want to say people should not eat horses because they are smarter than cows you better stop eating your morning bacon first.

If horses weren't such beautiful animals, IMO, no one would care if they were sent to slaughter after their usefulness was used up...

Cows have been bred for gentleness and taste, not for intelligence. In case you have not noticed a smart cow will not be around for very long. It will be first in line at the slaughter house.
You can say the same of most meat animals.
Domestic turkeys are some of the most stupid animals on earth but the wild turkeys are very wiley.
But domestic pigs as I said are still pretty smart they can be trained quite well. They can be trained at least as well as a dog.
The intelligence of animals never ceases to amaze me, even the meat animals.
If we disaprove of what other people eat, that's our problem. I've eaten horse, it's not delicious, but it's not that bad, either. I've eaten dog, too. Believe it or not, all animals are created equal. Eating horse isn't any worse than eating a cow. Even if you find horses cute.
The best use of the animals on this planet are whatever we decide they are, and most of us have decided we have a higher contract horses than we do with some other animals. And that's OK.
When we domesticated horses and asked them to work for us, we trusted them with our lives, and in turn, they trust us with theirs. It's to our credit to uphold that bargain. It's not only about being cute, but cute helps.
Many aren't against Horses' asses though. Look at the number of RATS in the Congress.
You're giving the horses a fair bit of credit. In the end I don't see that they are any more useful than chickens or cows, yet because we have fun riding them, though that is the only use they have, we feel for some reason that it would be immoral to use them for meet. I personally find that absurd
The meat is not marketed here in this country because most Americans find it absurd to eat them. If you wouldn't, you can consider yourself in the minority.
The only horse slaughter in this country for human consumption is done at three specific slaughterhouses who export the meat to France and other countries. To many it seems as bizarre as slaughtering dogs and shipping them to Korea. If you wouldn't find that objectionable either, you'd again find yourself in an even smaller minority.
We do have the right, you know, to mold a society with the values we like. Some values which are purely emotional are still worth holding.
This is one I'm not going to change my mind on, so if you aren't gonna budge either, we're at an impasse :~) I've got a horse out in my paddock that I'll give as much credit as he'll take.
I completely understand why you don't want to eat horse meat...but is that really enough to make it illegal to butcher horses and ship the meat out? It really isn't the government's job to make laws based on how some people feel about other people's eating habits
