JonBenet
Wall Street Journal Opinion Journal ^ | August 30, 2006 | DOROTHY RABINOWITZ

Two days into the JonBenet Ramsey/John Karr media deluge, a mid-fortyish male in line next to me at a food shop groaned at the day's newspaper headlines. "Now," muttered this stranger--though he wore a baseball cap with bill turned backward, which suggested a few things about him one could know right off--"now we're not going to hear about anything but this damned story for the next six weeks."

I sympathized, forbearing to tell him that it would have plenty of competition, what with the networks set to embark on round-the-clock wallowing in the Katrina anniversary.

I'm not entirely convinced that Karr is not the culprit. He seems clever enough to have covered his tracks as far as DNA is concerned. Maybe they let him go to see what he will do next -- after the California charges are resolved.

I always thought the most plausible explanation was that JonBenet died accidentally, perhaps from roughhousing with the older brother, or from punishment as you suggest, and one or both of the parents covered it up to make it look like an intruder was responsible. That would also explain the strange behavior of the parents during the police investigation.

Would someone please explain to me how stun gun marks on Jonbenet's body point to Patsy Ramsey or Burke? No stun gun was found in the home. No one knew them to own a stun gun and a family member wouldn't have needed to use a stun gun on her. A stun gun suggests an intruder needed to silence her as she was moved from her bed.

"Patsy Ramsey wrote the ransom note and never went to bed that night."

You're the first that I've seen that took note of the fact that Patsy Ramsey at 5 o'clock in the morning was still dressed in the same clothes she wore the night before though she claimed she went to bed after returning home the previous night. Congrats.

I don't think Karr did it. He seems to be a perveted nut -- but there are too many reasonable doubts for me to think anyone in her immediate family did it, either.

Anyone who thinks the Ramseys are guilty should read this.

"So the fact that they conclude he got his PhD from a mill means he can't conduct a polygraph test?"

No, it goes to his credibility. He has none. He has perpetrated a fraud which renders his subjective findings of the veracity of the Ramseys more than undependable.

The sad reality of most murders is that the vast majority are committed by family members or people who knew the victim well. The Police start every murder investigation by assuming that a family member or "friend" killed the vicitm. Some day, if you can, look up the stats on this, it is somewhere in the 85%+ range. Random killings are extremely rare.

One thing I have heard is that the Ramsey's were into some wierd stuff themselves, but I have nothing to verify that with. So why mention it? The people they did the wierd stuff to and with might have killed JonBenet for revenge or money. If I had to bet, I'd look at the family or "friends". Sad but true.

The police claim it was marks from a button or snap.

Common sense seemed to elude the Boulder Police Dept.

Steve Thomas is pushing his book. I have seen him on two shows and he came across as nasty, lacking in objectivity, and illogical, especially in his comments regarding the DA Mary Lacy. Apparently he would have wanted John Mark Karr just to be left free to run around. At least now Karr's face is known and people can keep their children away from him.

"The police claim it was marks from a button or snap." Wow! I've never seen a button or snap that can burn skin -- unless the snap was metal and heated. I don't think it is a matter of common sense eluding the Boulder Police Department -- I think it is a matter of them refusing to look at anything that exonerates the Ramseys.

Right.
And she had two different sets of stun gun marks on her.

I wondered the same thing. Although I tend to believe at this point that Karr was not involved, I am not totally excluding him. Maybe more than one person was involved in the murder. I have heard before of criminals including false details in their confessions.

Karr is nutty enough to have stayed on the write that rambling note. His alibi is not foolproof. Mainly the similarity of his handwriting to the ransom note and the use of words makes me wonder - some experts say he wrote the note, others say no.

"And she had two different sets of stun gun marks on her."

From MSNBC.COM:

"Taser International, the company that makes the weapon Smit believes was used, says their experts are convinced the marks did not come from a stun gun."

"A stun gun suggests an intruder needed to silence her as she was moved from her bed."

Have you ever used a stun-gun?? I have. Many times. Hit someone with a stun-gun and they scream bloody murder. Silence is not a response that I have ever observed after hitting someone with a stun-gun or taser device.

As to the marks, no one has established that they could only have been produced by a stun or taser device. Only that they might have been. Speculation at best.

"Gunner and I found out here on FR a few days back that wearing a baseball cap backward signals inferior intelligence or redneckery or some such thing."

Or.... it could signify having been a catcher on a baseball team.

You are judging the Ramsey family by your own childhood experience, which has no bearing. I'm very sorry for you, but Burke Ramsey was cleared and excluded as a posssible suspect after being interviewed (on tape, that has never been released) by psychiatrist working with law enforcement.

Leave the boy alone. He isn't your brother.
