This week my parents and I are cat-sitting my brother's fiance's cat. They went away for the week so he could meet her parents for the first time. She has had the cat for 10 years.
We have never had a pet before. The cat got here on Friday, August 25 and it was last seen about 3:30 A.M. this Monday morning August 28. Since Friday, the cat has generally hidden under a bed or sofa during the day, and has come out at night to eat and use the litter box. We had no problem locating where the cat was until today. The doors going outside have always been closed and even the doors to the 2nd floor where we live have been closed.
My parents and I have searched the house several times over, looking under every bed and sofa. We checked under the stove, under the refrigerator, under the sink, in all of the closets and cupboards. We have checked in all of the rooms many times.
I am asking for advice on how to find this cat. At this time, I believe the cat is in the house. It would have had to go through several closed and locked doors to get outside.
Any advice in finding the cat is greatly appreciated.
My Mom, who was given the task of cat-sitting for a week, is worried sick. My soon to be Sister-In-Law has had this cat for over ten years.

Open a can of tuna.
Electric can opener.
They can't resist it.
Check the tub and shower. Seriesly.

Some cats will get up in the lining of the mattres and hide there.
Attic? It may have been picked up and is in the Animal shelter. Do you live in the country?
Roll a ball of yarn around the living room. Bingo! The cat pounces.
Cats can crawl up into very small spaces even into the rafters.
Been there, done that.
Several times.
I second the tuna. No cat can resist.
Also, check the box spring of any bed. They will claw the flimsy cloth underneath and crawl up into the box spring.
Buy a mouse.
Possibly the attic, but I have checked every room on every floor many times.
Seriously, cats can find very small places to hide. Maybe up in the springs of the bed or furniture, may be in the drawers of a cabinet, may be in the top or back of closets.
Best bet, if the can opener and tuna doesn't work, would be to just stop rummaging around and let the house be peaceful and quiet for awhile.
That's where my cats hide.
Look underneath the couch and inside recliners too.
If that doesn't work, buy a dog to keep it away, then it will be sure to come back,...cats are like that.
Do you have a recliner chair? Bacon and Hap have one cat who has been known to climb inside the recliner from underneath.
I live in a suburban city. All the doors to the house have been closed.
That's right, dresser drawers; pull out the drawers and check behind them.
