The timing of the release of the two audio 911 tapes was seen by many campus sceptics
as an attempt by the DPD to douse the flames of hysteria enveloping parts of Durham and
the media during the first stages of the now known "Duke Rape Hoax".

These two tapes, the first alleging bad language as the basis of a crime in process, and
the second bringing about the handoff to the cops at Kroger, to date are the only contem-
poraneous physical evidence of any criminal activity that night.

The mysterious 911 caller was now confirmed by DPD as the second exotic dancer and
the drunken condition of the first was documented.

As the media and the Durham DA ploughed ahead with investigations and political
electioneering, these two hard pieces of evidence were seen by some as a message
from the DPD that 'you are going in the wrong direction'. Subsequent release of internal
DPD radio traffic bolsters this view. This was the first hole shot into the 'story'.

Plough ahead they did-- and as it now appears- possibly fabricate and conspire to create
a crime which never existed.
