Tony Soprano Channeling Sam Spade (Re Sgt. Gottlieb - NY Times Star Witness, Duke Rape Hoax)

I don't mind a reasonable amount of trouble. If I did, would you find me in those dark hours, eyeing some broad at Blinco's, about to find myself in the middle of the biggest story to hit town in years?

I'm Tony Soprano of the Court TV discussion board fame. No, not the guy on that TV show. I just took his moniker cause it gave me cover like a cheap toupee when a fella's follicles are few. I'm not afraid of cops like Gottlieb. I was there the night the caper with the fry cook went down.

Gottlieb and I rub each other the wrong way, like a cheap wool suit you've had one year too long. Things were tense that night, my friends. I shot off my mouth a few times.

As Gottlieb passed my barstool, he leaned in close. I could see the oily sweat on his shiny bald head. "Keep riding on me and they're gonna be picking iron out of your liver." He straightened up and, with his posse following him, sauntered out the door into the alley. What happened next, well, that's the most baffling mystery story in years.

A friend of mine, a newsie, was in Blinco's a few nights later. "Tony, Have the barkeep pour me some of that booze you're drinking, and I'll tell you a story you might want to hear." "Good booze makes any tale you're going to tell one I want to hear." I motioned for him to pull out the barstool beside me. We waited till the dame serving us gave me a wink and sauntered back to the bar.

"Did you see Gottlieb's picture on the front page of the local rag. Did you read the piece saying his boss Nifong should be worried he's going down for the Blinco's gig?'

"Yeah, me and half the town saw that. What's your beef? Gottlieb's days as a Big Shot Bully are as numbered as a Currier and Ives calendar. The cook ratted him out, said the "Bald guy" was the instigator. Of the coppers here that night, Gottlieb fit that description like a Hong Kong suit you had made to order. He's as finished as a Dame from an East Coast Boarding school. He's going down.

The newsie smiled, took another sip of his drink. "Not so fast, Tony, Gottlieb may have hired a lawyer, but he ain't gonna take the fall. Our big story tomorrow is two young cops will take the rap for him. No way bossman Nifong will let his boy Gottlieb go down till the Dukies are duked out." I took a drag on my cigarette and watched the smoke curl across the table. The newsie leaned in and pushed copy of the morning's paper my way.

But they have hair! Their heads look like lucky sheep who ran from a careless shearer. No way they fit the Cook's description. And Gottlieb lawyered up faster than a railroad car on an icy stretch of track!"

"Exactly. Nifong's the boss. He ain't gonna let no stinking fry cook ruin the best campaign strategy since Washington rowed across a frosty river in Delaware. Gottlieb's the chief investigator. Three months later, he turned in ...pages of notes. His recollection of events added details to Nifong's case like a New York seamstress adds sequins to a songbird's gown. Gottlieb's in solid with the boss."

I sat in stunned silence, not even a come hither look from the comely barmaid could stop my thoughts. The newsie took another sip of the bourbon I bought him.

"It ain't the first time either. One morning. around 6AM, Gottlieb ran a red light and rammed his car into another guy's ride right here in Raleigh. When the smoke cleared, Mr.Nobody's car had $7000 worth of damage. Our man Gottlieb didn't even get a ticket. Tony, if that was you or me, think the Raleigh cops would let it slide like a fried egg on a greasy stove?"

I leaned back. The newsie smiled a knowing smile. "Ain't gonna happen, Tony. Watch and see. The guy with the smashed car, the poor fry cook here that got knocked around? They are NOBODYS, Tony. And NOBODY cares." My beat can be ugly, my friends. The night can be cold. But this story chilled me like a eager bridegroom's champagne waiting to be uncorked. But it's not over yet. Tony Soprano doesn't go down easy.

The more information that surfaces the more apparent it becomes to fair-minded observers that our lacrosse team was railroaded and that three of our fellow students are being put on trial not because of evidence but because of a DA's incompetence and malice.

Sadly, many in the community have shown that they are not fair minded but would rather hunt for witches than search for justice.

The bold malignance of the Durham County persecutor has been propelled by the chants and screams of the Duke-and-Durham-Left who sprang into action as soon as it became clear that the alleged victim's story could be used to propagate their destructive black-versus-white worldview. The DDL used the press, protests and any pulpit they could find to rush to judgment and find our peers guilty in advance of the facts.

With the trial scheduled for sometime in spring, and with as much ugliness ahead us as behind, we Duke students have to ask the question-what now?

As a student body, first and foremost, we must demand justice. Let us correct last year's record and ensure that no matter what developments ensue we do not allow our personal prejudices to overwhelm our ethical mandate to observe due process and protect the innocent.

In order to be effective advocates for justice we must be able to recognize when it has been perverted. Part of the job of a columnist is to assess the information available and then let the facts speak for themselves. In that vein, let me offer some highlights from a chilling summer expose published in Newsweek with new information further exposing the perversion of justice perpetrated by Nifong:

-Nifong went on television and tried to explain away the total absence of lacrosse DNA in the rape kit by saying a condom could have prevented the transference, but the accuser herself told the hospital examiners in her story that no condoms were used.

-Nifong was running around declaring that the examining nurse found symptoms consistent with sexual assault and that he had "no doubt," a rape occurred, but the actual rape exam indicated only that swelling was present which turns out "can be caused by normal sexual activity."(Earlier that week, the accuser had sex with two men and used a vibrator in a performance.)

-The accuser claimed she was strangled during the attack, but the examining nurse found no physical evidence of this. On the night in question, she was committed to a mental health facility and it was there that she claimed she was raped. When she was brought to the hospital, however, she changed her story and said she was only groped. She changed her account again later to say she was in fact raped, but it seems her different versions have the rape being perpetrated by two men, by 20 men, and of course now the three set to stand trial. She even claimed at one point that the other stripper assisted in the rape. Ten years ago she levied another rape charge which she said happened three years before, though her father claimed the charge was false and she didn't pursue the case.

-Reade Seligmann's alibi has him placing six phone calls to his girlfriend during the mere 15-minute window in which it appears the rape could have occurred, and then hopping in a cab to get some fast food. Seligmann's attorney tried to bring this exculpatory evidence to Nifong to stave off the indictment, but Nifong wouldn't hear of it.

-Regarding Nifong's accusation that the players stonewalled him and the police, it turns out the co-captains renting the house not only quickly agreed to come with the police to the station for questions, but they didn't even try to get a lawyer and offered to take a polygraph. And when the order came down for 46 players' DNA samples their attorney was in the midst of telling them how they could appeal it when the players suddenly left the meeting, got in their cars and drove to the police station to offer their DNA.

Now, take a breath and remind yourself that this isn't fiction. The madness is real and the stakes enormous. Lives, futures, hopes-all on the line.

As the story unfolds a national magnifying glass will continue to be held over our campus and as a student body we have a moral duty to act with dignity and to demand fair and just treatment for our peers-no slander, no abuse, no prejudice tolerated.

If a professor like Houston Baker continues to make unsubstantiated charges of racist assault, disgracing himself and dishonoring his school, don't stand for it. Write a letter to the editor, to the administration, to the professor him or herself. If you see reporters looking for an on site spot interview with a student, volunteer yourself and put the truth out there.

Encourage people to watch news shows like the "O'Reilly Factor" and "Hannity & Colmes," which offer an exceptionally fair and accurate view of the case.

And lastly, if you find yourself in the presence of a student who insists the lacrosse players are a bunch of racist criminals and that the players are guilty no matter what the evidence says-put them in their place.

If you don't, I will.

... and watch the MSM go silent on the ensuing child porn charges against Karr. I smell a bigger rat than just the DA thing. Focus on location Karr was "extradited" from; this is the ball which is being tossed up and down.

Another thing: whenever Dems are down a point in the "resonance" of MSM "wins", something about sex is always their prop/stalling/redirect/refocusing angle.

The other shoe will be dropping soon, and we'll be able to see what the Dems have in mind for their new "refocusing" objective.

Liberals don't give a rats patootie about "sex" between adults and children -- "it's only sex". Meanwhile, in CA, Sheila Kuehl, is gaining a very stripped down predatory move to shove open homosexuality onto little children. I wasn't surprised at all at the syncronicity of these events.

Alia visual subliminal by way of explanation: "Karr only wants to look at naked children. He won't kill them. Therefore be glad and happy that Sheila Kuehl is forcing the teaching of "lookism". She isn't supporting the raping and murder of little children. See how harmless the gay community is!".

Second Translation: "Trust us, the Duke Players really, really DID rape Crystal. But they didn't kill her." Straights and gays have SOOO much in common."

The Dem "new tone" is indeed far more subtle; but it is nonetheless, nonsense and wicked.
