How many digits have ip addresses expanded to?

IPv4 is and always has been 4 decimal numbers.

My ip is currently 4 groups of 3decimals, ipv4.

About two weeks ago they ran a trial run with 6 groups, ipv6, which is where the internet is ultimately headed.

Life got interesting for a couple of days while my ISP was monkeying with the ip number in its tests.
