MONROE, N.C. A 9-month-old boy was in critical condition after eating cocaine left within his reach by the child's father and two friends, authorities said.
Monroe police said the boy had been left alone in a room at his father's home in northwest Monroe on Saturday. The father and two friends returned to the room and found the child had swallowed some of the cocaine. Police have not said how much.
The three men took the baby to a local hospital, but doctors there sent the child via helicopter to the main Charlotte branch of Carolinas Medical Center. He was in critical condition Sunday night. The child's condition was not immediately available Monday.
The father, Brandon Scott Lewis, 22, was charged with possession of cocaine, authorities said.
Jonathan Lawrence Henderson, 37, and David Autry, 19, both of Matthews, were charged with possession and delivery of the drug, authorities said. Both men also face charges of assault inflicting serious bodily injury.

NC Ping for idiots in Monroe?
Thanks!!
What an idiot.
At least these guys had the decency to bring the baby to the hospital knowing they were likely to be in serious trouble.
MONROE (AP) The condition of a 9-month-old boy who ate cocaine over the weekend was upgraded Tuesday to stable, Monroe police said Tuesday.
Authorities said the boy had been left alone in a room at his father's home in northwest Monroe on Saturday. The father and two friends returned to the room and found the child had swallowed some of the cocaine. Police have not said how much.
The three men took the baby to a local hospital, where doctors sent the child via helicopter to the main Charlotte branch of Carolinas Medical Center. The boy had been in critical condition for the past two days.
Brandon Scott Lewis, 22, the child's father, was charged with possession of cocaine, authorities said.
Jonathan Lawrence Henderson, 37, and David Autry, 19, both of Matthews, were charged with possession and delivery of the drug, authorities said. Both men also face charges of assault inflicting serious bodily injury.
Good point.
Thanks for the updater. The baby is still in my family's prayers.
I am the baby's aunt. The men didn't admit what had happened until they had to. If they had been honest with the hospital, they could have helped the baby much sooner. Plus, they were stupid enough to drive the baby to the hospital while high on cocaine. I guess they didn't want to call 911 because paramedics would have found cocaine at the house. Now, that's really putting the baby's needs first!
How's the baby doing?
Congratulations on marrying into such a family.
He's much better. He was able to be taken off of life support the next day, and has slowly come back since. He has suffered very badly, and it's been agonizing to watch. He was released from the hospital tonight (Wednesday) and will be followed by Poison Control and DSS (not to mention his family's obvious scrutiny). Thank you for asking about his condition.
