But if he only did it ONCE, to me that's very odd to put on a HS yearbook signing page (SHALL BE THE CONQUEROR), and then to have those exact letters show up as the signature (S.B.T.C.) on the "ransom note" in a murder case to which he later confesses

I get the sense this slogan could have been used in a comic book or something of that nature and was a phrase known to those who read that material. It would be hard to track down there were so many comics or maybe it was a line from a cult film.
