If he had indeed been in the house while they were out and he does have computer knowledge, whats keeping him from going into the family records to see that that amount had been deposited in their account....

So a guy breaks into the house,sits down at the computer,sees the figure and decides to incorporate the figure into a ransom note? And all of this takes *how* long? I've always assumed that housebreakers want to be in the house for as little time as possible.
