I think the Ramseys case shows that just because you "lawyer up" doesn't indicate a guilty mind. You give the cops all you can in one or 2 interviews, then shut up.

Why would someone who killed the girl in the basement leave an elaborate ransom note claiming to be Phillipino terrorists asking for a specific amont of money equalling John's work bonus?

Truer words... After the first interview, if they're homing in on you, they're just looking for inconsistencies in your story. A lawyer can save your (innocent) butt and maybe they'll look for the perp, rather than the person who talks too much.

I think it shows that, in the unlikely but all too possible case that an innocent person becomes a suspect in a crime, he'd better "lawyer up".

The police and prosecutors are not going to be on his side. Once they suspect someone, their efforts focus on building a case rather than identifying the perp.
