Why $118,000? Why not $100,000, or $150,000?

I always thought that was odd. Why $118,000? Why not $100,000, or $150,000?I recall having read that that was the exact amount of some kind of bonus that the father had either recently from his employer or had recently been promised by his employer.
If this is,in fact,true that would rule out a stranger IMO.
