It's actually a split from the Presbyterian, which is usually quite leftist.
The founders of the church were Scientologists, Robert DeGrimston Moore and Mary Ann McClean who were fascinated by psychoanalyst, Robert Adler who along with L. Ron Hubbard developed the 'Compulsions Analysis' to shine a light on human neurotic fears and hang-ups. By 1965, the two went out on their own.
