I've heard of this happening before. The incident I heard about the guy got speared in the let, and dragged into the water as well. He was also lucky enough to have survived the incident. It wouldn't surprise me if these fish had some intent involved, I mean it is how they hunt naturally.

Barracuda have done serious damage to boaters in freak occurrences when they've launched out of the water and sliced in to people. I also remember instances (more than one) when folks strapped into fighting chairs have been ripped from the decks and pulled into the water where, strapped, they've sunk to their demise.
I've got minor scars from fishing and so do my friends, no big deal. It's raw nature and stupid, unpredictable stuff can happen, just like driving your car to work.
