As we all know, spending time here on FR, we recognize that there are various opinions about what makes a great conservative or what it means to be a true conservative. But like in Baseball, one does not get to the hall of fame unless enough of the sportsfans and writers think that person deserving after performing great deeds in his career. So here is the place to decide who gets to be in the Conservative Icon Hall of Fame.
I shall kick it off with my unimpeachable list (so don't try impeaching it...lol).
Cheers and happy friday to all.
Antonin Scalia
I'd restrict the membership to those who identified themselves with the modern conservative movement (or defined it as they led). Of that, my first Hall of Fame class would be:
William F. Buckley
Ronald Reagan
Rush Limbaugh
Newt Gingrich
Barry Goldwater
Yes, I know Goldwater sort of left the reservation in his senile years and Buckley is doing the same but they were the trailblazers who brought many with them into the movement. Gingrich led the GOP takeover of the House in 1994 which still survives to this day. Limbaugh is the daily evangelist of the movement, winning the converts that can form a majority. Reagan needs no explanation.
Several other names can be added later but I don't think you HAVE a legitimate conservative movement without these five.
Newt's mom was right.
She died on American Airlines Flight 77 on 9/11.
She's pass on, but never forgotten.
I fully agree.
Barbara Olson certainly deserves her place. If Hillary does run in 2008, I'll bet Barbara's work will suddenly become relevant again.
I can abide by that. :o)
Boy, we could use a few of his type now. He had more spine than the rest put together. (Well, Jeff Sessions I REALLY like)
Good call.
He's still kicking isn't he? I thought I heard he's a big Putie fan.
ANother good one. Not sure if he was conservative or just a great observer.
Did Hayek consider himself to be conservative?
Goldwater was excellent in his younger days. He seemed to become a lib towards the end.
Honest Abe had to do what he had to do. No other president, except George Washington, had such an enormous task. I like Abe. His belief in God and his speeches were very inspring.
Certainly well above Lindsey Graham
He's still too young.
John Marshall and John Jay
I can abide by all except Newt. I don't trust him.
