Norman - NewsChannel 8 has confirmed that OU starting quarterback Rhett Bomar is one of two players who have been kicked off the team following an internal investigation.
A press release from the university doesn't name the two players who were dismissed, but NewsChannel 8 confirmed this afternoon that Bomar and another player were paid to work at a private business and paid for hours they didn't work. Several reports say the other player is offensive lineman J.D. Quinn, who was expected to possibly start at guard this season.
A press release from the University also states the players have been permanently dismissed and will not be allowed to return to the team at any time.
"We spend a considerable amount of time addressing our players regarding their personal conduct and the NCAA rules," head coach Bob Stoops said in a statement. "They know exactly what we expect from them. Ultimately, they have to make right decisions. The same holds true for our boosters. When they do not, the consequences are serious, and we will not tolerate this behavior."
Bomar has been in some off-the-field trouble, but had remained on the team even after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of possession of alcohol by a minor on May 30th. He was cited in March after an undercover police officer spotted him pouring a beer into a cup and drinking it during a basketball game.
He was sentenced to six months of probation and was required to pay court costs and an administrative fee.
Bomar became the starting quarterback in the second game last year and led OU to an 8-and-3 record and a win in the Holiday Bowl. His 2,018 yards set a school record for freshmen.
Bomar was named to the pre-season Maxwell Award list earlier this summer.
Transfer Joey Halzle, also a sophomore, was second on the OU depth chart. He came to the Sooners in the offseason from Golden West College in California.
The Sooners begin the season on September 2nd at home against Alabama-Birmingham.
Unbelievable. I hate cheaters, and I'm glad they were caught, I just wish they went to USC or something. There goes our season

Ohhhh Noooooooooo...hehehehhe
Wow, must be a lot going on for them to outright give them the boot, i.e., the NCAA was nosing around, or it was pretty clear what was going on.
I think the car dealership should be boycotted. I have to live in Austin an listen to this crap all day long. We need another Edwin Simmons to run naked in a Texas coaches house again.
