I can only link to the USA today article. The pics show Mel in party mode with the local hotties.

Well, at least he left alone and didn't take one with him. It'd have been even worse had one of them been working the stick shift for him when he was pulled over.

I'm really starting to wonder if his comments aren't the result of alcohol and being constantly asked about antisemitism.

Back when I drank, if someone said something that irritated me, I would set out to prove it just to get under their skin.

The temptation must have been strong though...

They look like fans to me getting in a posed foto with the star. Can't really read anything into that -- except Mel looks drunk.

Fella makes a movie that angers the left for it's popularizing a religious figure, and they try to use the fella's weakness and desperation to destroy him.

The fact that it's the left who's doing the attack makes me take Mel's side in this.

It's not right to kick someone when they're down for the count.

Well that may be some proof that deeply rooted core values can remain intact even when your completely polluted.

Of course, I'm not sure that helps his case much either, come to thing of it...

Nope. Bedding down a hottie would have been better than speeding three sheets to the wind and making ridiculous statements to the cops

Yeah the photos aren't a good reflection on Mel but all this crap about Jew hating is absurd. He was DRUNK. Drunk people SAY and DO stupid things.

Got a nice view there of De Nial?

He wasn't drunk out of his mind, he was at best tipsy... and I don't know about you, but when I get drunk, I don't suddenly decide to think the Jews are responsible for all the woe in the world. When even he takes responsibility for the views he expressed, denial from you seems even more absurd.

As for the pictures, they just show a guy having a good time.

Yeah,
If you are drunk enough to forget it, you are drunk enough to say just about anyting. Some of the strange reaction is due to the very short memory one has when this drunk. When you are drunk enough to have black outs you have anywhere from a two minute to half hour memory. When being interviewed and arrested by the cop he probably forgot everything that happened before, and was probably wondering why a cop was arresting him. The Cop reported that Gibson said "Are you a Jew?". I wonder what made him say that. I suspect the cop asked him something about Passion or his work that made Mel suspicious (despite losing recall of events since becoming drunk, really drunk people only have partial impairment of long term memory). That and parinoia made him lash out in a way to hurt the cop. That is it may not be that Gibson hated Jews, but figured it would piss the cop off. Off course that is s stupid thing to do, but hey when you have a two minute memory. I also suspect that the cop changed his alcohol level to make Gibson look worse, but experments have shown memory loss and uncontroled behavior at levels below .15. The two seem to go hand in hand, if a drunk is behaving very badly he is likely to forget all about it the next morning.

Gibson's publicist, Alan Nierob, confirmed that the director is in an "ongoing program" for his alcoholism but declined to elaborate. Gibson also said: "I am in the process of understanding where those vicious words came from during that drunken display."

that would be ... HIS MOUTH !

Add alcohol to Mel:

Deeply rooted core value against infidelity - intact

Deeply rooted core value against anti-semitism - suffered some difficulties...

Boy, that's a tangled web of rationalizations to explain away some pretty rough talk that came out of his mouth.

""Mel certainly thought so."

He was also trashed out of his mind at the time.

To defend Mel...(I don't want to use the devil's advocate cliche in this case)

1. Certainly looks to me as if folks asked to be photographed with the super star and he was kind enough to oblige.

2. I am familiar with many beverage brands that come in green bottles. I do not recognize the label on Mel's bottle. Furthermore it appears that the label has a chart of nutritional information. I don't recall having seen a beer bottle with that chart.

3. It is possible that this digital photog shot dozens of pictures...I suspect that this mag would only use the ones that show Mel in an unusual appearance...not withstanding this I have seen photos of perfectly sober folks taken in candid circumstances where they looked wrecked in the photo. I do know that law enforcement does not use still photos as evidence in DUI cases.

4. Anybody care to guess if there were any men in this gathering and whether these were their "hotties"? Hey I wouldn't think less of the men if they wanted to be in a photo with Mel...in fact while the Passion of the Christ was fresh I would suspect that most Freepers would liked to have had their picture taken with Mel.

I would. I kick the traitor now, and if he suffers a car accident into the ocean, I'd be happy as a clam.

Well, we don't know how well his fidelity stood up that night, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Oh lighten up. I remember saying that I wanted to have a baby at 50 when I was drunk. That couldn't be farther from the truth. People are delusional when drunk.

You're right, there is a certain amount of Public Relations damage control in that statement... But I think short of falling on his sword, I think it's the most we can expect.
