were paid more then the time they actually worked. Why is that bad? What am I missing?
Its a way to hide payola to the student/athlete, which is a big no-no.
Only the coaches and administrators are supposed to get paid, not the kids who put the asses in the seats.

Ok, I get it. I wasn't thinking it through. The old pay for no work routine to hide the fact the school is actually paying them to play football(or some other sport). Gotcha!
Thanks to all the responses to my questions, you can always count on FReepers to have the answers!:)

They can get paid but it has to be done within the rules. Not the first time that a booster got too generous.

Matt Leineart has a family thats loaded, so no one blinked an eye that he was living a life that more or less resembled a pro-athlete then a amateur.
I'm trying to find out who the famous Miami Hurricane was who had the ultimate line when they asked him what the difference would be going from the U of M to the NFL.
His answer.
"A pay cut".

Can a non-scholarship athlete work or receive booster money? I sense that a car dealership in some university town is just going to bypass the whole system and pay a star athlete -- tuition and a salary -- for endorsements.

They get a free college education and room and board. Not to mention memories that will last a lifetime but I guess sappy crap like that doesn't matter anymore.

Actually, the Athletes can work, they just have to do it on the up and up, which Bomar didn't do. I hope the booster gets banned from the campus as well.
