In my opinion, Cheek never wanted to run.
He was talked into it, but never wanted to do it. Perhaps he hoped he wouldn't get enough signatures to get on the ballot.
In my opinion, there was no deal between Cheek and Nifong, of any sort. Cheek decided not to run because he never wanted to.
