Chalmers also said in response to questions from reporters that even though he is stepping down in 18 months from his job as chief, the case would receive his full attention.
"I think it has to do with public confidence," he said. "I think in a situation like this, people want to see...the chief."

I also just emailed my congressman about this hate crime,
and the re-emergence of racially biased attitudes
among southern police, and the need for our society
not to tolerate this in the 21st century; and calling
upon him to ask the FBI to investigate this as a hate crime.
(Maybe the FBI won't respond to me, but maybe they will if a congressman forwards my inquiry.)
