Thanks for this fascinating post. I've heard some of her diary before, as Ken Burns used it quite a bit in his Civil War series, which I like in spite of its tendencies toward political correctness.
This comment by Mrs. Chesnut seems rather timeless, applies today as well as to back then:
"Those wretched creatures [in] the Congress ... could never rise to the greatness of the occasion."
