Yes, Cutting trees can cause deserts, but not all deserts are cause by cutting trees. Mountain ranges also have a significant impact on the creation of deserts, and there is a serious lack of deserts in Northern Africa.
Or are you suggestions that the Romans pulled down the mountains as well.
