I would think a report favorable to the defense from Herr Gottleib would still stand, since it would be a statement against his own interest. (I think there is a legal term for that) His interest is was to bring about a conviction, according to Durham PD Chief Chalmers who said--

"Our responsibility is to investigate the case, to protect the integrity of the case, and when the time comes, provide the evidence that we've gathered in a court of law to bring about a conviction."
