Here's the response on the "racial slur element." You're correct that our online stories posted Saturday afternoon and evening reported that the man who reported being assaulted, restaurant cook Rene Thomas, said he exchanged racial insults with several men. When the story was being edited for the print edition, the editor in charge took a more conservative approach to the claim, which had not been corroborated by any witness, and decided to take it out of the story pending more reporting.
It seems to me at this point that the allegation that racial epithets were exchanged is relevant to the reporting; our story posted at newsobserver.com today indicates that the investigation focuses not just on the assault report but also the possibility that an officer issued a racial insult.

Really. Who verified the Broom comment and the other statements made by Crystal in the 3/25 News & Observer piece ?
Who verified them Mrs. Sill? Double Standard again!
Kim Roberts was unknown to the media at that point, no one verified any of Crystal's statements or assertions. Who verified that Crystal had never danced for a group before and was new to dancing?
Who verified that her Father went to see her at the hospital?
