The transitional stage from Morzine to Macon was destined to feature an big escape and 15 men promptly obliged by breaking free at the 53km mark. At the end of the long, hot day no one had an answer to the power of Tom Boonens reliable lead-out man Matteo Tosatto. The Italian easily beat his rivals to the line to give Quickstep its first stage win of the 2006 Tour.
Please FReepmail nutmeg if you want on or off the Tour de France 2006 list.
Leipheimer did what he had to do. He has a possible chance at a 10th place finish. He just wasn't strong enough. Looks like it will come down to the first three riders. Landis SHOULD win it but it's not over until its over. Does anyone know what would happen if it were then separated by just a few seconds. Could it be decided on the last stage in Paris? I know it is a gentleman's agreement that this is largely ceremonial but what if????
Greg LeMond vs Laurent Fignon -- LeMond was down by 48 seconds, won by 8 seconds in Paris.
That was, as I am lead to believe, an ITT, which is unusual for the final stage.
Correct and correct.
Wasn't that a time trial, however?
Yes, it was. It included cobblestones, too, if I remember correctly.
Yes, but I believe that may have been a time trial.
Does this preclude the final stage from changing the winner of the Tour?
