"I understand why people think we're gay," she says. "There isn't a definition in our culture for this kind of bond between women. So I get why people have to label it — how can you be this close without it being sexual?

Once upon a time, there was a definition in our culture. It was called "friendship."

It used to be that having lifelong close friends of the same sex didn't raise suspicions. If you saw two guys palling around with each other in trunks at the beach, they were just friends. If two women walked arm in arm, it was because they were really close confidantes. It's only now that homosexuality has been legitimized and streamlined as a "alternative lifestyle" or "orientation" that people think it's 50/50 something sexual is going on if two women or two men are roommates or constant companions.

it is sad that "friendship" can't be between two people of the same sex.......then again, friendship between two people of differant sexes is considered an "affair"....

so maybe, its just that our society has sexualized EVERYTHING and everybody.....

for the record, I could care less if Opray was a goose...I don't watch her and could care less what she does....

My thoughts exactly. It fascinates -- and irks -- me that two women can't be close friends without someone assuming they are lesbians. I know nothing about Oprah's private life. But it does seem crazy that she or anyone should have to defend having a close friend. And no matter what she says, some people won't believe her.
