The problem is that many of the official stats that MLB produces (like the save and the old GWRBI) are not particularly useful, and many of the most useful stats(like runs created) have to be calculated - sometimes tediously - from the stats that are officially provided.

Baseball is quirky like that.
Most casual sports fans can name how many homers Babe Ruth hit. Some can't name how many Touchdowns Walter Payton had or how many Emmitt Smith ended up with.
That's just the way it is.
