Michael Schumacher took his 68th pole position here in Magny-Cours this afternoon, underlying that his success in Indianapolis was not just due to any Michelin conservatism but also Bridgestones improved performance. The former champion looked strong all day and lapped his Ferrari in 1m 15.493s to seal the issue just as arch-rival Fernando Alonso posted 1m 15.785s for Renault and Michelin. It was not quite the result that the partisan crowd had expected, and it will be fascinating to see on Sunday which of them has the greater fuel load.

Unfortunately for Schumacher, it's not very likely he'll ever catch up with Alonzo this year..
That screw up at Monaco pretty much cooked Schumacher's goose.
He should have have known better.

I seem to remember that back in 1976 no one gave James Hunt a chance of beating Lauda for the championship.

" seem to remember that back in 1976 no one gave James Hunt a chance of beating Lauda for the championship."
True.
But I don't see it happening this year.
Alonso won 4 straight races between Barcelona and Montreal, and currently leads Schumacher by 19 points, with 8 races to go.
And Alonso has finished every single race this year, and scored 10 or 8 points in every race (first or second) apart from Indianapolis when he scored 4 points.

I grant you that the odds of taking the championship from Alonso is small, my only point is they are not zero, and sometimes a driver that is given no chance to win does.
But if i were a betting man I would bet the same way as you.

So Schumacher won.
Congrats to him.
But then Alonso finished second again, so the gap is only down to 17, with 7 races to go..
If Alonzo keep finishing first or second the rest of the season, like he's been doing so far, its going to be hard for Schumacher to catch up with him.
Going to be an interesting next few months.

I would love it if Scummy won the rest of the races, while Alonzo calmly finished right behind him, so Scummy comes up a few points short of the title.
MS is the Bill Clinton of F1. It's all about him, and always has been. The BS he spewed about his brakes locking when he broke his leg at Siverstone - when it was clearly driver error, and the absolute lies he told after trying to foul the Monaco Q-fying in his favor, were so Clinton I could almost begin to hear "I did not have sexual..."
Every time he speaks, you can see him calculatine how to put himself in the brightest, most favorable light, at the expense of truth, and everyone else.
If you look at pictures of a young Clinton, and MS, they even look remarkably alike. Blllllgh!

Schumacher is still the best driver by far of his generation.
Of course he has some flaws. No one is perfect.

Am I supposed to feel better about either one of them now? Sorry, it didn't work for me.

"Am I supposed to feel better about either one of them now?"
Nope.
And BJ Klinton is not the best politician of his generation either.
That's drive-by media BS.
Remember Klinton never won even 50% of the popular vote ever.
He has Perot to thank for his win in 1992.
Schumacher on the other hand has the numbers to back him up.
An unprecedented SEVEN world championships, highest number of pole positions, highest number of wins by far, highest points totals, etc etc.
