Now, class, I do wish to draw your attention to the fact that some of you are
still in detention for what seems to be a very long time, m'Kay?
Now, class, here are some issues, like the ones we've already discussed in class - now Stan, m'Kay, that's bad (you should stop flicking guitar picks into the back of Shiela's head, m'Kay?, and Rupert, Rupert, Rupert(?), m'kay, would you please stop doing that with Shannon's breast, m'kay?, anyways class, it is hoped that the following suggestions/I>, m'kay, may help you to decide which scenes, conversations, and events offer the best support for the main points of the movie in your essay. Now class, m'kay?, I'm going to only say this once, an essay that is entirely composed of "Bite me" will be result in a failing grade, m'kay?
- Movies (and bands) such as Spinal Tap are often about social issues. So, does some social issue or current event seem to be the main topic of the movie?
- If so, how did creators of the movie bring it to your attention?
- Did something unexpected or unusual happen to one of the characters of the movie?
- What is the result of that unexpected or unusual occurance?
- Did any problems arise in the show?
- How were the problems resolved?
- Did any unusual terms, words, or labels get used?
- Is someone or some aspect of society or the media being criticized?
- If so, how?
- Conversely, do some characters defend certain things, people, or processes?
- Do any stereotypes appear? How and why?
- Were any actions repeated? What and how? By whom?
- When Timmy's band plays at the Battle of the Bands, some people react negatively. They think that the people who are enjoying the band are "laughing" at Timmy. They seem unable to realize that handicapped people could make people feel other things besides pity or sarcasm.
- In Stan's speech at the end of the episode he says that some people want to keep handicapped people safe at home, because then they don't have to deal with them. He says that that is what he liked about Timmy and the Lords of the Underworld, that Timmy was in your face and you had to deal with him.
- Phil Collins ends up being the leader of the belief that Timmy and the Lords of the Underworld should not play. He says that people are laughing at them and that people with disabilities shouldn't be laughed at. However, Phil Collins is shown always carrying around the Oscar he won for a song, kissing it, etc... and as trying to break up Timmy's band. The creators of Southpark show the viewers that Phil Collins really loves attention and recognition and so, is saying that Timmy shouldn't play not because he cares about Timmy's feelings, but because he is jealous of the attention Timmy is receiving.
M'kay, now class, I wish to stress that you have
exactly five minutes, and not ONE second longer, to submit your essays upon the end of the TV broadcast. NO, Kyle, you can NOT add total amount of commercial time onto the deadline. Now class, should any
one of you fail this exam, well, then we shall ALL have the pleasure of meeting again.
